The Rule of Thirds

Today, I want to talk about one of my most used and favorite technique in photography, the Rule of Thirds. Many of you may not know what I’m talking about and may not know much about photography. That’s okay. We’ve all been at the bottom of something and we went up as we learned more.

The Rule of Thirds isn’t only used in photography but in film as well.

This is the Rule of Thirds.

Rule of Thirds

The photo is divided into 9 equal sections with 2 pairs of horizontal and vertical lines. Each intersecting point is called a power point. These are all guidelines to help one to compose a better picture. Not every photo follows this rule but as a beginner, the rule of thirds is a great way to learn.

In this example, the photographer used the vertical lines and aligned the twig with one of the lines. Notice how the bottom left power point is used on the frog. Placing an object on a power point puts all the focus on that object.

In this other example, the horizontal line is used and is placed on top of the horizon in the photo. A power point is also used here to put the focus on the resting surfer.

Some photographers only use a single power point and no lines. Do you know which point they’re using here?

There are no limits to what you do with your creations. Have fun and keep learning!
